Chester take record medal haul at North East Regional
Championships June 2008
In
what was the club’s best performance for years, Chester’s
swimmers claimed a grand total of thirteen medals at the North East Regional
(NER) Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield spread over two weekends
of competition on June 8th-9th and 15th-16th. After the national championships,
the NERs are the most prestigious event for young swimmers in the North
East region – covering Northumberland and Durham and Yorkshire.
So success here is a good indicator of progress.
Strong performances were
evident throughout the 16-person squad (eight boys and eight girls) with
many progressing through heats to finals. But it was the medal winners
who topped the bill for Chester with the club’s “two Adams”,
Charlton and Hollows leading the way. Both finished second overall in
their age-group categories. Adam Charlton (11-year age group) took two
gold medals, one silver and one bronze and his time in the 200m butterfly
confirmed his position as one of the leading butterfly swimmers in the
UK. Adam Hollows (12-years) took four silver and one bronze and showed
again his increasing strength in the freestyle and backstroke.
Chester’s
expertise in the backstroke showed in the other medals achieved. James
Morgan (11-years), appearing in his first NERs claimed a silver medal
in the 100m while Calum Gibson (14-years), appearing in his last NERs
before he graduates to youth-level swimming, won a silver and a bronze.
Meanwhile, for the girls, Jessica Hollows (10-years) won a silver and
a bronze medal.
Coach Ian Bullock said that the club’s achievements “were
the result of all the hard work in training over the last few months.
Chester is again showing itself to be a leading club in the region”.
Three swimmers now lead the Chester challenge in the national championships
in July; Adam Charlton and Adam Hollows will be joined by Jimmy Gibson
(13-years) whose performance in Sheffield was affected by illness.
